Ammonium ions (NH4+) are present in bodies of water and can be absorbed by aquatic plants to be used for proteins and growth of the plant. Ammonium exists in equilibrium between ammonia (NH3) and ammonium in water. The total ammonia concentration is typically measured by adding an ionic strength adjuster (ISA) to convert all ammonium to ammonia. It is important to monitor the ammonium levels in aquaculture to ensure optimal growth and development of aquatic plants.
Hanna offer a range of ion selective electrodes (ISE) that are suitable for determining the total ammonia concentration.
